The race went off and our yelling was most comical: DC Liar: “Come on Lasty! You’re going the wrong way. Dammit!” Me: “Come on Future Glue! Ya gotta at least catch Lasty. By definition you must catch Lasty!” … I had Hey Byrne and let’s just say after a brief stint running third, the horse-faced former mayor of Chicago Jayne Byrne ran better….Less than five minutes into our visit to the friendliest neighborhood tavern and we were offered the opportunity to get in on a horse racing pool….

I also liked the #1 horse, the gray. … Mucho Macho or Macho Libre or whatever the hell his name was. Too lazy to go look it up. He ran a good race too…. I thought Desormeaux rode a smart race–but he was lucky that Big Brown broke cleanly and got out ahead of the press so he didn’t get stuck i n the middle of the pack. … He’s an absolutely beautiful mover and a gorgeous horse to boot…. That Yankee whatever horse–he is built really, really weird. … Shame that more racehorses don’t go on to compete in other disciplines–Rox Dene and Touch of Class both rocked harder post-racing than they did on the track….

We’ve added some compost and horse manure to the soil (I helped myself to the free fertilizer lying in one of a million horse pastures around here), … I ran a half marathon the weekend before in Stockholm, beating my predicted time and enjoying the racing life again in a nice and noncompetitive atmosphere….
